Through innovative research and new teaching and learning formats, the BTU is shaping the future: with scientific findings and practice-relevant solutions, it is helping to shape the major issues of the future and transformation processes. In four profile lines - "Energy Transition and Decarbonization," "Health and Life Sciences," "Global Change and Transformation Processes," and "Artificial Intelligence and Sensor Technology" - it combines its strengths in teaching and research across institutes and faculties.
At its locations in Cottbus and Senftenberg, the BTU guarantees its students a challenging education, individual support and the opportunity to learn from and with each other with curiosity and openness. The BTU stands for an inspiring atmosphere of learning and research, fostered by dialogical, democratic cooperation among all: The diversity of our faculty and students enables innovation and progress.

The Faculty 2 - Environment and Natural Sciences invites applications for a

PROFESSORSHIP (W3) Molecular genetics (Molekulare Genetik)

commencing at the earliest opportunity.

The professorship is located at the Institute of Biotechnology at BTU Cottbus–Senftenberg. The institute combines basic research on socially relevant topics in life sciences with the development of innovative processes and practical applications for sustainable added value. The structural and scientific development of the institute is based on two central fields of biotechnology research: biomedicine and environment.
The professorship is part of a coordinated call for applications for three thematically related professorships (molecular genetics, cell physiology, and biochemistry). These are intended to further sharpen the institute's biomedical and environmental focus and deepen interdisciplinary networking between the research areas.

We are looking for:

a nationally and internationally recognized personality with experience in the field of molecular genetics, as evidenced by relevant publications and third-party funding.
The professorship is intended to strengthen the Institute of Biotechnology and also contribute to the improvement of shared technology platforms and the intensification of interdisciplinary networks, including the development of collaborative research centres. Interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary collaboration with colleagues on site, as well as close cooperation with non-university research institutions such as Fraunhofer IZI-BB, Leibniz IHP, Fraunhofer IPMS, and Fraunhofer IAP, is desirable.
The position has a particular interest in research on stress responses in eukaryotic cells, with a biomedical focus (e.g., disease models). The research should align with the institute's research groups and focus on biomedicine and/or the environment. The stress responses of cells should be investigated with a preferred focus on (i) promoter interaction studies, (ii) molecular regulation of gene expression (e.g., epigenetic modification, DNA accessibility during transcription), (iii) control of gene expression by non-coding RNAs. Within the overall concept of the Institute of Biotechnology at the Faculty of Environment and Natural Sciences, the professorship belongs to the Health and Life Sciences profile line and is located at the Senftenberg campus.

The professorship is to represent the aforementioned research fields in research and teaching in the degree programs Biotechnologie, Biotechnology, Life Science and International Health, and other degree programs at the BTU, as well as to perform teaching duties in the bachelor's and master's degree programs in German and English. If sufficient German language skills are not available, a willingness to learn German at short notice is required to ensure participation in the management of the institute, the faculty, and in university and non-university committees, as well as teaching the bachelor's degree programs in German.

  • a completed university degree (biology, biotechnology, biochemistry, human biology, molecular biology, or comparable),
  • pedagogical aptitude,
  • special aptitude for scientific work, usually demonstrated by the quality of a doctorate (molecular biology, molecular genetics, biochemistry, cell biology, or another relevant field)
  • a habilitation or additional scientific achievements as equivalent

In addition, you have experience in securing third-party funding and carrying out third-party-funded projects. Your research topics should be relevant to the DFG, the BMFTR, or comparable international research funding institutions. Experience with research projects on technology transfer is an advantage.

Your teaching experience enables you to provide excellent instruction in the subject area listed here. You are capable of teaching at all curricular levels, from bachelor's to doctoral, supervising theses, and promoting young scientists. Your knowledge and experience enable you to participate in academic self-administration and to shape the faculty's profile.
