The Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU) bundles top-level research and transfer at an international level, thereby creating an interdisciplinary innovation network and an excellent science and technology location. Together with its renowned partners, the BTU forms the Lausitz Science Network - an alliance of research institutions that together want to further develop the strengths of the science location Cottbus-Senftenberg and increase its visibility. Through innovative research and new teaching and learning formats, the BTU is shaping the future: with scientific findings and practice-relevant solutions, it is helping to shape the major issues of the future and transformation processes. In four profile lines - "Energy Transition and Decarbonization," "Health and Life Sciences," "Global Change and Transformation Processes," and "Artificial Intelligence and Sensor Technology" - it combines its strengths in teaching and research across institutes and faculties.

At its locations in Cottbus and Senftenberg, the BTU guarantees its students a challenging education, individual support and the opportunity to learn from and with each other with curiosity and openness. The BTU stands for an inspiring atmosphere of learning and research in a dialogical, democratic cooperation of all: The diversity of our faculty and students enables innovation and progress.

The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Energy Systems invites applications for a

PROFESSORSHIP (W3) Power electronics and drive systems with very high power density (Leistungselektronik und Antriebssysteme sehr hoher Leistungsdichte)

commencing at the earliest opportunity.

The professorship is integrated into the Institute of Energy Technology and the Center for Hybrid Electric Systems Cottbus (chesco) as a central scientific institution of the university. Interdisciplinary research projects are expected in collaboration with neighbouring chairs and the newly established junior professorship “Electric Machines with Very High Power Density.” Research work for mobility and aviation applications can take advantage of the outstanding infrastructure and opportunities offered by the new chesco research institute. In the field of power converters for grid applications, a research project dealing with large-scale storage power plants is to be pursued within the framework of the Energy Innovation Center (EIZ) at BTU C-S. The research work will not only be application- and industry-oriented, but will also relate to basic research eligible for DFG funding.

We are looking for:

... a nationally and internationally recognized candidate with solid scientific experience in several of the following areas, if possible:

  • Power electronics and drives for mobile applications, especially those with very high power density,
  • Power electronics for grid applications, such as connecting renewable energy sources or using them in high-voltage grids,
  • Design and optimization of energy-efficient and high-performance drive systems,
  • Research, development, and optimization of power converters for complex electrical energy storage systems, such as battery and hydrogen storage systems,

where each case involves systemic considerations, therefore not the development of power semiconductors.

For this purpose, evidence must be provided of

  • Activities and experience in the field of research (experience in acquiring third-party funding or project management/content responsibility, high-ranking publications in peer-reviewed journals or corresponding patents, proven, distinctive competence in the field of basic or application-oriented research, promotion of young scientists),
  • Activities and experience in teaching
  • Activities and experience in the field of transfer or direct industrial implementation.

The professorship is expected to represent the aforementioned areas in research and teaching in the degree programs Hybrid Electric Propulsion Technology, Power Engineering, Elektrotechnik, Energietechnik und –wirtschaft, as well as in other engineering degree programs at the BTU, and to perform teaching duties in the bachelor's and master's degree programs in German and English. We expect very good knowledge of English and German. If you do not have sufficient language skills, you must be willing to learn the respective language as soon as possible. In addition to research and teaching, we expect you to be involved in the management of the institute, the faculty, or in university and non-university committees. Participation in regional and cross-regional networks is also expected.

Profile

As a future professor, you can provide evidence of the following requirements in accordance with § 43 Para. 1 No. 1 to 4a Brandenburg Higher Education Act (BbgHG):

  • a completed university degree (Electrical Engineering, Electrical Power Engineering, or equiv.)
  • pedagogical aptitude,
  • a special aptitude for academic work, as a rule through the outstanding quality of a doctorate, and
  • a habilitation or additional academic achievements as an equivalent.

In addition, you have experience in the acquisition of third-party funding and in the implementation of third-party funded projects, whereby experience with DFG or EU projects is particularly desirable.

Your teaching experience enables excellent teaching for the subject area to be filled here. You have the ability to teach at all curricular levels from bachelor's to doctorate, to supervise theses and to support young academics. Your knowledge and experience enable you to participate in academic self-administration and in raising the profile of the faculty.
