WHAT TO EXPECT

Our novel monolithic technology for mode-locked titanium-sapphire lasers has received considerable attention from the ultrafast community (Optica 12, 1031-1034 (2025)). You can now bring this laser to the next level, particularly in terms of pulse duration and repetition rate.

Another field of research at the Photonics Laboratory is adaptive optics. Here, two doctoral students will develop new deformable mirrors for use in gravitational wave detectors and for industrial applications. You are welcome to exchange ideas with them and find out more about this exciting field.

The Photonics Laboratory is part of the Institute of Optical Technologies. The institute comprises research groups led by seven professors, covering a wide range of optical sciences.

You will teach the “Development of Solid State Lasers” lab class for seven days per year.

YOUR BACKGROUND

You have a PhD in Physics or Electrical Engineering, specialising in mode-locked lasers.

As an experimentalist, you are familiar with setting up lasers in the laboratory. Ideally, you will have developed a mode-locked laser for your doctoral thesis.

You have experience of using Python or Matlab for numerical simulations and feel confident applying this knowledge to the non-linear pulse propagation of ultrafast pulses.

You enjoy training students to assist you with your research, as well as supervising a lab class on developing solid state lasers.

Your daily business involves collaborating with other scientists and negotiating specifications with suppliers.

You also have a good command of written and spoken English.

WE OFFER YOU

The Photonics Laboratory has an excellent track record in developing optical solutions for industry and science. Many of our graduates and former doctoral students now hold leading positions in industry or research institutes.

You will work in a research lab fully equipped for developing ultrafast lasers.

This is a full-time position (39 hours and 50 minutes per week) funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation – DFG) for a period of two years.

You will receive remuneration on pay scale 13 of the Public Sector Collective Agreement of the Federal States (TV-L).

Having completed your PhD, and as a member of our university, you will be eligible to apply for your own DFG projects.

This post offers exciting opportunities for academic development in the field of photonics, in both research and teaching. In connection with the anticipated professorship vacancy in February 2029, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to play a pivotal role in shaping the profile of the subject area in consultation with the department. Provided they meet the relevant criteria, applicants will, of course, be able to apply for the professorship when it is advertised.
