Engineer for Laboratory Automation – AI Driven Photovoltaic Research

HI ERN forms the centrepiece of a close partnership between Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZJ), the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin (HZB) for Materials and Energy, and Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU) at the Erlangen site. The partners’ collaboration focuses on innovative materials and processes for photovoltaic energy systems, as well as hydrogen as a storage and carrier medium for CO2-neutral energy. Your Job

You will work at the intersection of robotics, electronics, and photovoltaic research. Key focus areas include:

  • Laboratory automation with multi-axis robot arms, linear motion systems and automated pipetting
  • Design and fabrication of hardware for new experimental requirements —sample-changing systems, characterization setups, rapid prototyping
  • Electronics for laboratory control (Raspberry Pi, ESP32, amplifiers, oscilloscopes)
  • Optical systems – detectors, lenses, spectral filters and fiber optics

Your Profile

  • Master's degree in Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Process Engineering, or Materials Science
  • Strong interest in developing mechatronic systems and computer-controlled hardware
  • Enjoyment of working in an international, interdisciplinary environment
  • Very good command of written and spoken English with extensive vocabulary is required (at least B2 level according to the ), ideally supported by a certificate confirming the language level. Knowledge of the German language is not mandatory but certainly appreciated
