Master Thesis - Investigation of gate-induced strain fields in spin qubits through cryogenic (S)TEM

Forschungszentrum Jülich’s Ernst Ruska-Centre for Microscopy and Spectroscopy with Electrons (ER-C), specifically the Physics of Nanoscale Systems (ER-C-1), is a world-class research institute focused on understanding and engineering materials at the atomic scale. Using state-of-the-art electron microscopy and spectroscopy, the institute develops new experimental methods to reveal how nanoscale structures determine magnetic, electronic, catalytic, and soft-matter properties. Its research supports major challenges in energy conversion and storage, advanced materials, nanotechnology, and emerging life-science applications. ER-C-1 also operates as part of a national user facility, giving academic and industrial researchers access to cutting-edge instruments, expert support, and collaborative opportunities in an international environment—making it an outstanding place for PhD candidates to carry out high-impact, interdisciplinary research.

Your Job

In this Master thesis, Si/Ge spin qubits will be studied through cryogenic scanning-transmission electron microscopy, (S)TEM. Electron transparent TEM lamellae will be extracted from the actual spin qubit device by advanced focused ion beam (FIB) and inserted in the TEM for first, optimized of lamella quality and thickness, and second, study of strain. The scientific goal is to unveil the effect that gate configurations have in quantum devices to strain and disorder. Strain will be measured through different techniques such as geometrical phase analysis and 4D STEM, and comparisons will be established between room temperature and cryogenic temperatures with dedicated and unique liquid helium TEM holders.

At the end of the project, the student will develop knowladge and master the following habilities:

  • Functionlity and challenges in the state of the art quantum devices.
  • Preparation and nanoscale characterisation of materials and devices by focus ion beam milling and and various in-situ TEM and STEM techniques.
  • Python based data analysis of TEM data

Your Profile

  • You are studying physics, material sciences, engineering, or a related subject at a university and are looking for a topic for a master's thesis.
  • Python programming skills will be highly valued.
  • You are interested in and ideally also have previous knowledge in the fields of electron microscopy, solid state physics, and quantum devices.
  • You can work independently and reponsibly, show commitment, a high level of teamwork, and enjoyment of cooperative collaboration.
  • Furthermore, you can quickly familiarize yourself with new methods and techniques.
  • You are fluent in written and spoken English.
