Postdoc (Physics) – ³He and neutron polarization methods

The Jülich Centre for Neutron Science – Neutron Methods (JCNS-4) operates at the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Zentrum (MLZ) in Garching near Munich a suite of high performance neutron scattering instruments. It provides access to these instruments for scientists from universities and research institutions in Germany and the world. The JCNS actively researches inprovements in neutron methods including the use of polarized ³He neutron spin filters and the physics thereof. We are looking for a scientist to join the ³He/Neutron polarization group for a new project.

Your Job

To work on developments towards a new new neutron spin analyzer technique using advanced polarized ³He and neutron methods that could be employed for example on longitudinal neutron spin echo as well as for other neutron spin sensitive methods. Your duties and responsibilities within this position:

  • Explore new techniques using a ³He spin filter to perform real-time acquisition of neutron spin. Developments will rely heavily upon advanced NMR techniques, DAQ programming and timing sequences, and polarized neutron experimental technique and instrumentation
  • Travel to other sources for experiments and on a regular basis for collaborative work
  • Contributing to the instrument development of advanced polarized ³He techniques for neutron science to meet future experimental challenges
  • Conducting and disseminating world-class research via publications and conferences; presentations in the fields mentioned above
  • Furthermore, we support you to perform own high-profile research in close cooperation with the JCNS institutes in Jülich and Garching

Your Profile

  • Master degree and subsequent PhD degree in Physics (or a similar field of study)
  • Experience with NMR, polarized neutron instrumentation, and polarized noble gas techniques
  • A strong background in experimental physics research using neutrons and atomic physics
  • Abilities in programming, e.g. python, for data acquisition and timing
  • Initiative character, creativity, good interpersonal communication and presentation skills, result orientation, and analytical skills. Ability to work independently and as a team player in JCNS
  • Very good command of written and spoken English with extensive vocabulary is required (at least B2 level according to the ), ideally supported by a certificate confirming the language level
