Staff Scientist / PostDoc – Machine Learning for Scientific Applications

You are a motivated post-doctoral researcher or a seasoned machine learning scientist looking to make a difference in society through cutting-edge AI research? This is the position for you!

The Institute for Advanced Simulation – Data Analytics and Machine Learning (IAS-8) at Forschungszentrum Jülich is dedicated to pushing the boundaries of data science theory and application. Our research spans from use-inspired, method-driven theory to application-driven research.

Join our team as a dedicated scientist and contribute to our exciting research projects. Our work focuses on models and algorithms for supervised and unsupervised learning. We devise deep learning models, which find application in imaging and image-based science, including in collaboration with domain scientists on and off campus in fields like remote sensing, microscopy of cell colonies, plant sciences, health-care, and MRI imaging. Our mission is not only to create accurate solutions but also quantify model uncertainties, analyze robustness, reliability, and trustworthiness of AI models, and develop methods for explainability of AI solutions.

As part of our team, you will have the opportunity to develop novel learning methods, investigate application and adaptation of foundation models, devise efficient training schemes for large models on high-performance computers like JUPITER at the Jülich Supercomputing Center. If you're passionate about AI research and eager to make a real-world impact, we want to hear from you!

Your Job

  • Work on a wide range of computer vision and machine learning methods and applications focusing on the aspects outlined above, inspired by the needs of societally relevant applications, e.g. from neuro- or bio sciences.
  • Advance our understanding of the underlying theory, as well as applicability to scientific applications, where robustness, explainability, interpretability, and reliability are as important as high accuracy
  • Supervise student projects at BSc, MSc, and PhD level.
