Munich

At Helmholtz Munich, we develop groundbreaking solutions for a healthier society in a rapidly changing world. We believe that diverse perspectives drive innovation. Through strong partnerships, we accelerate the transfer of new ideas from the lab to real-life applications, improving lives.

We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher (f/m/x) to develop advanced physical and computational models integrating transcriptional and biomechanical data during mammalian gastrulation. This position is part of an ambitious interdisciplinary project in collaboration with Professor Shankar Srinivas (University of Oxford) and will be based in Dr. Antonio Scialdone’s group at Helmholtz Munich, a leading European hub for AI in biology.

The successful candidate will design and implement physics-informed machine learning frameworks and predictive models to uncover how gene expression and mechanical forces interact to shape embryonic development. This role offers a unique opportunity to work at the interface of developmental biology, biophysics, and computational science, contributing to a pioneering effort to integrate molecular and mechanical insights in developmental biology.

Your tasks

  • Develop computational pipelines to integrate single-cell transcriptomics, spatial gene expression, and biomechanical measurements.
  • Implement physics-informed machine learning models to predict mechanical properties from cell morphology.
  • Collaborate closely with experimental teams to integrate transcriptomic and imaging data with computational models and actively contribute to experimental design.
  • Contribute to publications in high-impact journals and present findings at international conferences.

Your profile

  • PhD (degree or almost completed) in Physics, Applied Mathematics, Complex System or a related field.
  • Strong background in mathematical modeling, machine learning, or biophysical simulations.
  • Demonstrated interest in biological systems, prior experience in biological modeling and in transcriptomic data analysis.
  • Proficiency in programming (e.g., Python, R) and familiarity with high-performance computing environments.
  • Independent, creative, and able to thrive in a collaborative, interdisciplinary setting.

What We Offer

  • A stimulating research environment at Helmholtz Munich with access to cutting-edge computational infrastructure.
  • Close mentorship and collaboration with leading experts in developmental biology, mathematical modelling, and AI.
  • Opportunities for professional growth, networking, and international exposure.

If you fulfill all the requirements, you may be eligible for a salary grade of up to E 13. Social benefits are based on the Collective Wage Agreement for Public-Sector Employees (TVöD). The position has an (initial) fixed term of 2 years but may be extended under certain circumstances.

Managing Director Mike Frieser: „We believe that diversity is the key to groundbreaking research and innovative solutions. Our flexible working models and remote options create a supportive environment for balancing work and family life. For us, contributing to a healthier society in such an inspiring workplace is truly meaningful.“

Benefits

  • Career Development: Postdoc program, scientific training & career center with tailored offers
  • Scientific Resources: State-of-the-art infrastruture and Core Facilities
  • Recreation: 30 days annual leave, flexi days, plus public holidays
  • International Staff Service: Support with the relocation and integration process in Germany
  • Health Promotion: Sports, company doctor, mental health initiatives
