This position is located at the Materials Research Institute (IMFAA) at Aalen University and is part of a collaborative research project involving several industry and academic partners. The project aims to improve the performance characteristics and service life of solid-state batteries. To achieve this, novel methods for microstructuring composite cathodes and the cathode-separator interface will be investigated.

The following position is available to be filled at the earliest possible date at Aalen University of Applied Science in the Materials Research Institute Aalen (IMFAA):

Research Assistant / PhD student with a focus in All Solid State Batteries (ASSB) (m/f/d) - 25-12-04 - Part-time 70% (27,65 h/week) -

Your tasks:

  • You develop slurries and composite-cathodes with defined microstructures, e. g. physically or chemically graded or with a microstructured surface.
  • You comprehensively characterize material properties and electrode microstructures with different methods, such as FIB-SEM, EDX, XRD or Raman.
  • You will perform electrochemical analyses, cells tests, and investigate the aging behaviour.
  • You construct model cells and perform cell tests.
  • You carry out your research work in modern, well-equipped laboratories.

Your profile:

  • You hold an excellent Master’s degree or PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science/Engineering, Engineering, Physics, or a related field, especially with a focus on sold-state batteries.
  • You have a profound experimental knowledge in powder, slurry, and coating processes.
  • You have a strong background in ASSB, and experience with battery technology is beneficial.
  • You have experience with material characterization techniques (SEM, EDX, XRD) and with electrochemical characterization of battery materials (potentiostatic/galvanostatic cycling, EIS).
  • You possess very good IT skills, and experience with Python, MATLAB, and Origin is advantageous.
  • You have very good knowledge of German or English.
  • You demonstrate strong teamwork skills, an independent and structured way of working, high flexibility and motivation, as well as excellent communication skills.

The position is limited to two years with the possibility of extension. The position offers the opportunity to pursue a doctorate with the appropriate qualifications.

The position will be classified in pay group EG 13 of the collective agreement for the public service of the federal states (TV-L), provided that the legal and personal requirements are met.
