W2-Professorship Cellular Energy Systems (m/f/d)

Your Profile

With the designation Zellulare Energiesysteme (Cellular Energy Systems), the Kaiserslautern University of Applied Sciences recognizes the increasing importance of decentralized, smart, and sector-coupled energy systems for shaping a sustainable energy supply. The aim of the professorship is to further strengthen the close integration of cellular energy generation, energy storage, smart energy management, grid integration, and the coupling of the electricity, heating, and mobility sectors in teaching and research, as well as to expand inter-disciplinary cooperation with related fields.

We are looking for a scientifically qualified and committed person who will represent and further develop the new field of Cellular Energy Systems in teaching and research.
You have completed a university degree in electrical engineering or another suitable field of study, as well as a special qualification for scientific work, demonstrated by a qualified doctorate. You demonstrate your outstanding scientific expertise through relevant scientific publications and an independent scientific profile.
You have at least five years of professional experience, including at least three years outside the higher education sector.

In addition to relevant technical expertise and professional experience in the field of cellular energy systems, candidates are expected to have expertise and experience in several of the following areas:

• Grid planning and simulation
• Regulatory frameworks
• Operation of cellular public networks or building and campus networks
• Power quality
• Grid protection and operations management
• Energy storage sytems
• Sector coupling
• Superconducting transmission and distribution systems
• High- and medium-voltage DC grids

Your Responsibilities

The fields of specialization must be represented in both teaching and applied research. We consider excellent teaching skills and a high level of commitment to teaching to be just as essential as a willingness to participate in exchanges with our international partner universities and to offer courses in both German and English. In addition, we expect active participation in teaching foundational courses, advanced courses, and special lectures on current research topics, as well as, where applicable, lectures in related fields and in part-time degree programs.

In addition, you will be responsible for:

• developing and establishing an independent research profile
• conducting applied research in cooperation with academia and industry
• actively participating in doctoral projects and supporting early-career researchers
• actively contributing to the establishment, expansion, and further development of teaching and degree programs

We expect the successful candidate to integrate well into the existing team, both professionally and personally, to be actively involved in the academic self-governance of our university, and to enjoy sharing knowledge from their own professional experience with students.

Teaching and Research Environment

Kaiserslautern University of Applied Sciences offers a dynamic and interdisciplinary environment with excellent opportunities to develop an independent teaching and research profile. The Department Angewandte Ingenieurwissenschaften provides modern teaching and laboratory infrastructure housed in new buildings.

We also expect initiative, a professional approach to feedback, and a strong on-campus presence, as well as full professional proficiency in both German and English.

What We Offer

The position is to be filled as of 1 September 2027 at the Kaiserslautern campus of Kaiserslautern University of Applied Sciences in the Department Angewandte Ingenieurwissenschaften. Full-time positions are generally suitable for part-time employment, provided that operational requirements do not conflict.

Kaiserslautern University of Applied Sciences is a research-intensive university of applied sciences with strengths in computer science, engineering, business, design, and health sciences. Around 5,200 students are enrolled in more than 70 degree programmes and continuing education programmes across its three campuses in Kaiserslautern, Pirmasens, and Zweibrücken. The university currently has four established research focus areas.
