ENGLISH VERSION
The Academy of Media Arts Cologne (KHM) offers a rigorous and interdisciplinary approach to the media arts. With its project-based "Media and Fine Arts" diploma degree, it emphasizes the development of artistic practice, together with the acquisition of media technology and media-theoretical skills. The Academy pursues an interdisciplinary approach to the teaching and researching of media and visual arts.
The department of exMedia at the KHM is offering the following position, starting from the winter semester 2027/28:
If the requirements are met, employment in the civil service is possible as civil servant (in German: Beamter/Beamtin) or as public employee under private law. We are looking for a colleague with an interdisciplinary art practice focused on games that are critical, inclusive, interdisciplinary and situated within a broader context of socially relevant artistic engagement.
As an integral part of this professorship, the successful candidate shall demonstrate an established artistic and scholarly practice with emerging national and international impact, and a trace of prominence in the field of Interactive Art & Games. They will show a successful track record of engaging with students and encouraging them to take creative risks and foster their authentic voices. They require a prominent record of trans- or post-disciplinary research that includes one or more areas such as: games as an art form; virtual worlds and ecological games; visual, audio, interface and narrative design; games as social practice; and the physical and embodied connection of games to play and performance; also an experience with the dissemination of work in various innovative platforms and cultural contexts (live-events, exhibitions, site-specific practices, mobile and web-based media, etc.)
Situated within the department of exMedia, as part of its newly established focus area of Art and Technology, this position will require to teach and develop innovative approaches to a broader field of gaming as a technological but also aesthetic and cultural phenomenon, to encourage artistic and experimental approaches to game and play, and to engage with contemporary issues and critical approaches to gaming and interactivity to challenge conventions and the boundaries of inter-/reactive media.
It would be advantageous if the candidate has experience in game engine-based and/or computational media practice with a focus on areas such as critical approaches to gamification and behavioral design, augmented/virtual/mixed reality (AR, VR, MR), algorithmic aesthetics, AI-driven immersive systems, real-time simulations, or worldbuilding. Collaboration is expected both within the department and beyond, in research and creative fields such as computational thinking, 2D and 3D animation, sound, creative writing, digital art and new media.
A major focus of the duties is the continuous supervision of student projects. Pedagogical aptitude and experience, as well as empathy and social competence are expected, combined with a sensibility towards diverse student identities (gender, race, class, disability, sexual orientation). In case of the need for improved proficiency in German, the KHM will cover the tuition fees for language courses to enable active participation in the self-administration of the university, in particular participation in committees and the further development of the curriculum. It is expected that the applicant will live in the Cologne area.
The key criterion for appointment is outstanding artistic ability. Further requirements are set out in Section 29 of the North Rhine-Westphalia Art College Act.
The Academy of Media Arts Cologne (KHM) is an equal opportunity employer committed to creating a discrimination-free learning, teaching and work environment and works towards removing structural barriers (such as physical abilities, language, nationality/ethnicity, age, gender, heteronormative, and others). We actively encourage applications from all those who can contribute, through their research, teaching, lived experiences, and service, to the diversity and excellence of the academic community at KHM. The KHM strives to raise its female quota in research and teaching positions. Applications by women will be given priority if qualifications and professional expertise are equivalent to those of male applicants and reasons specific to individual candidates do not prevail. The KHM explicitly encourages qualified candidates with migrant background and/or who are BIPoC to apply. Applicants with a recognized severe disability and those with equivalent status will be given preferential consideration in cases of equal suitability, qualifications, and professional performance.
