We are looking for you:

Software Engineer – Workflow Innovation & Process Automation (Java, Camunda) (m/f/x)

in Munich

Your tasks and responsibilities:

You will design and implement modern workflows and automation solutions, including exploratory digital solutions that test how modern technologies can improve processes, services, and collaboration. The role sits at the intersection of process automation, backend development, system integration, and emerging technologies such as AI-supported workflow and information processing.

Working with technologies such as Camunda, Java, Spring Boot, REST APIs, GitLab, Docker, and Kubernetes, you will contribute to prototyping, validating, and scaling solutions that can become part of a broader digital ecosystem and improve how a large public institution operates and delivers services.

Your responsibilieties in detail:

  • Design, develop, and refine pilot applications, prototypes, and exploratory solutions for digitalization and process automation
  • Build and orchestrate digital workflows, especially in the context of Camunda and BPMN
  • Develop backend components and services using Java and Spring Boot
  • Integrate workflows and applications into existing system landscapes via REST APIs, for example with line-of-business systems, e-file solutions, DMS, or paperless environments
  • Explore and prototype how AI-supported approaches can be applied in practice to improve workflows, knowledge handling, service delivery, or process support
  • Test new technologies and implementation approaches in order to assess their feasibility, value, and scalability
  • Work closely with business units, IT, and project teams to turn requirements into practical and future-oriented solutions
  • Contribute to the evolution of a central platform for digitalization, automation, and innovation, with room for experimentation and technical co-creation
  • Help shape sound technical foundations through clean code, sustainable architecture, and pragmatic implementation standards

Your qualifications:

  • Experience with or strong interest in digitalization, workflow design, process automation, or exploratory product development
  • Experience designing and integrating REST APIs, interfaces, and system integration
  • Solid understanding and hands-on experience of software development, ideally with Java and Spring Boot
  • A degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field, or a comparable qualification (e.g., completed vocational training in IT such as Fachinformatiker/in), or equivalent practical experience
  • Interest in developing and testing pilot use cases, proofs of concept, and iterative digital solutions
  • Curiosity about emerging technologies, especially the practical use of AI in digital processes and services
  • Basic understanding of modern development and deployment practices such as GitLab, CI/CD, Docker, or Kubernetes
  • A structured and solution-oriented way of working, with the ability to translate complex requirements into understandable digital solutions
  • Strong collaboration skills, initiative, willingness to learn, and an experimental mindset

Nice to have

  • Experience with Camunda and/or BPMN
  • Basic knowledge of React or other frontend technologies
  • Exposure to RPA, for example with Robot Framework
  • Experience integrating legacy systems into modern digital environments
  • First practical experience with AI-enabled applications, prototyping, or automation use cases
  • Interest in administrative, organizational, or public-sector processes and their digital transformation
