About us:

The Rachel Carson Center for Environment and Society (RCC) is looking for a student assistant (studentische Hilfskraft) for 20 hours per week to manage the RCC library. The position will start on 15 November 2026 or shortly thereafter. The position is initially a fixed-term position through September 30, 2027, which includes a three-month probation period.

The RCC is an international, interdisciplinary research institute located in central Munich that dedicated to the study of environment and society from a wealth of disciplines and perspectives. It was founded in 2009 as a joint initiative of LMU Munich (Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität) and the Deutsches Museum. Its working language is English. The RCC features a number of graduate programs, is home to numerous research projects, and hosts a rotating group of international visiting scholars and fellows. The RCC also runs a library holding approximately 8,000 books that speak to the environmental humanities—the largest library in Europe of its kind.

We are looking for you:

Student Assistant Library Management (m/f/x)

in Munich

Your tasks and responsibilities:

  • Collection development (acquisition of monographs, edited volumes, audiovisual materials, and journal subscriptions)
  • Cataloguing and classification (descriptive cataloguing according to RDA, cataloguing in B3Kat using Aleph, management of local data via SISIS Sunrise, and subject classification according to the Regensburg Classification Scheme (RVK))
  • Processing and preservation of library materials (labelling books and carrying out minor book repairs)
  • Provision of library services (organizing loans for visiting scholars and staff, advising and assisting visiting scholars (approx. 15–20) at the RCC as well as external users with regard to the library’s holdings)
  • Independent management of the allocated budget

Your qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree, ideally in Library and Information Science; alternatively, a relevant degree in the humanities, social sciences, or a related field
  • Excellent knowledge of libraries and familiarity with cataloging and/or a willingness to learn these tasks
  • Prior knowledge of the Munich library systems is advantageous
  • Very good written and spoken English and German
  • A meticulous and independent work style, as well as excellent organizational and communication skills
  • A high degree of reliability and commitment
  • Ability to work as part of a team and an interest in working with colleagues of diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Enrollment at a German university through at least September 30, 2027. The assistant to be hired should be able to work on-site (Leopoldstraße 11a) three to four days per week.

Benefits:

The associate will work part-time (20 hours per week) on a studentische Hilfskraft contract at LMU Munich. For this reason, enrolled status (Immatrikulation) in a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree at a German university is required. Salary will be determined according to LMU compensation for studentische Hilfskräfte. As the candidate will be an employee of the state of Bavaria, they are required to have German health insurance as well as to pay German taxes and contributions to the pension system.
