Doctoral researcher position in long-term urban-environment interactions in Germany (f/m/d)

We are seeking a committed young researcher for a

Doctoral position (f/m/d)

in long-term urban-environment interactions within the Department of Co-evolution of Land use and Urbanization in close collaboration with the Institute of Geosciences, Friedrich Schiller Universität. The general topic of the dissertation project shall regard urban palaeoenvironment work on lakes in Berlin including biomarkers, isotope, chronological analysis of sediment core, and statistical analysis/modelling of changes through time.

The successful candidate will become a member of the International Max Planck Research School for Modeling the Anthropocene (IMPRS ModA) to ensure best support for the professional development regarding scientific knowledge and personal skills. They will also attend Core Research Theme meetings of the wider Max Planck Institute of Geoanthropology, as well as the Department of Geosciences at FSU, for academic, interdisciplinary exchange with colleagues from different disciplines.

The position offers a unique opportunity to work with leading scientists in Geoanthropology using state-of-the-art research infrastructure and developing the own portfolio of skills for the later career.

Tasks

The tasks of the successful candidate will include:

  • palaeoenvironmental fieldwork within the urban contexts of Berlin and Jena, sampling appropriate water bodies for long-term sedimentary records.
  • coordination and undertaking of multidisciplinary analysis of the resulting sedimentary records in the laboratories of MPI-GEA and FSU, including chronometric sampling, sediment descriptions, microfossil sampling, isotope and biomarker analyses, microplastic analyses, and ostracod analyses.
  • statistical analysis of the resulting age models and changes in different parameters through time.
  • eading and contributing to department outputs (e.g. publications, datasets, outreach activities)
  • development of new multidisciplinary research directions.

Your qualification

Required

  • Masters degree in palaeoenvironmental science, geosciences, or geology.
  • Experience collecing and working on sediment cores from different terrestrial contexts.
  • Expertise in varied chronometric, biomolecular, archaeobotanical, and microfaunal analyses of sediment recortds.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, which can be shown in bachelor resp. master thesis and if applicable in publications and outreach activities
  • Excellent English skills.

Advantageous:

  • Experience with studying urban environmental change and records of pollution.
  • Organizational skills e.g. for outreach activities.
  • Evidence of outreach with local communities and stakeholders.

Our offer

We offer you a full-time position for three years, starting at latest on July, 1st 2026. Renumeration will follow the standard PhD salaries given in the Max Planck Society which correspond to 65% of EG 13 TvöD (Bund). You are entitled to a 30 days' holiday.
