Lead Data Platform Engineer (m/w/d)

INTRODUCTION We are modernizing Müller's complete application landscape — from classic fat clients toward containerized web, mobile, and event-driven integration workloads running on our new GCP-based DevOps Platform with a central managed GitLab at its core. As Lead Test Automation Engineer, you build our new test automation team in Bucharest and Ulm from the ground up: you shape the test strategy for this multi-year transformation, set the technical direction, and make quality a built-in property of how Müller ships software. WHAT CONVINCES US

  • Several years of hands-on experience as a Lead Data Platform Engineer, Principal Data Engineer, or Tech Lead with end-to-end ownership for building and operating an Enterprise Data & Analytics Platform on a public cloud.
  • Deep technical expertise in the Google Cloud Data Stack (BigQuery, Dataflow, Managed Airflow, Dataplex, Pub/Sub, Cloud DLP) or comparable solid experience with modern data platforms on AWS/Azure.
  • Proven track record in designing and operating scalable Lakehouse architectures with consistent use of Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform), modern data transformation frameworks (e.g., dbt Core), and CI/CD practices.
  • Solid knowledge of integrating hybrid data landscapes and diverse source systems, including SAP systems (S/4HANA, CDC, ODP/CDS) as well as high-volume streaming workloads.
  • Experience in implementing Data-as-a-Product and self-service concepts using modern governance solutions (e.g., Collibra), as well as implementing robust security and compliance standards (e.g., VPC Service Controls, Policy Tags, GoBD).
  • Strong architectural judgment to balance speed, scalability, governance, vendor lock-in, and total cost of ownership in real trade-offs.
  • Experience in technical leadership and coaching of data engineers across all seniority levels, as well as establishing clear quality standards (code reviews, RFCs, Architecture Decision Records).
  • Excellent stakeholder communication across engineering, security, business, and external partners – confidently moving between C-level presentations and code reviews with developers on the same day.
  • Business-fluent English and very good German or Romanian language skills.

WHAT YOU WILL DRIVE WITH US

  • You shape and take responsibility for the technical vision, target architecture, and further development of our new GCP-based Enterprise Data & Analytics Platform, anchored on the Data-as-a-Product principles of self-service, data quality, and governance.
  • You develop robust integration and data architectures to efficiently merge complex and heterogeneous data sources from SAP, e-commerce, and corporate systems.
  • You are responsible for the technical excellence of the platform regarding availability, performance, security, scalability, and cost efficiency.
  • You take over the technical leadership and build up the new Data Platform team in Bucharest and Ulm, shaping how architectural decisions are made, data models are developed, and technical standards are set.
  • You collaborate closely with the Head of Data & AI on strategic and technical decision-making, translating the data and platform strategy into concrete technical roadmaps and architectural decisions, and representing the platform in technology and IT strategy discussions.
  • Together with colleagues from the business departments, you ensure that our data products solve real business problems.
  • You drive cultural change – from traditional DWH structures to agile, domain-oriented data product teams built on a strong, centrally provided platform.

WHAT WE OFFER

  • A greenfield opportunity to shape a new GCP Data & Analytics Platform from day one for one of Europe's largest family-owned retailers.
  • High visibility, short decision-making paths, and a direct impact on the data and technology landscape of the entire organization.
  • The opportunity to build, develop, and sustainably shape an international data platform team.
  • Modern technologies, challenging architectural topics, and an environment where technological excellence is explicitly encouraged.
  • Flexible working model (desk sharing and mobile working).
  • Employee discount on products Müller sells.
