Clausthal University of Technology is a research-intensive university with strong national and international networks. Its approximately 80 professors, 1,100 staff members, and 3,000 students benefit from short communication channels, a personal atmosphere, and the stunning landscape of the Harz Mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As the region’s largest employer, Clausthal University of Technology is the most important economic driver and fosters cultural diversity and internationalism. Clausthal University of Technology is fully committed to the overarching theme of the “circular economy” and aims to contribute to the development of a sustainable society in the digital age through research, teaching, and administration.
We are looking forward, to fill a position, for the Research Group Machine Learned Models for Engineers (ML4E) at the Institute for Software and Systems Engineering (ISSE) at the TU Clausthal.
The position is full-time, remunerated according to the German TV-L scheme (up to grade E 13, contingent on applicant qualifications), and offered for an initial duration of 3 years. The willingness to complete an academic qualification (doctoral degree or habilitation) is expected. A part-time employment is generally possible.
In the ML4E research group, we develop methods to support engineers and scientists through the use of machine learning. In the area of “Smart Water Cycles,” we focus on ML-based forecasting models for various water management applications. Today, we are already making significant contributions to predicting extreme events. A flagship project is our AI-based flood early warning system, which was awarded the “Climate Municipality 2024” prize.
Current research findings indicate that data-driven models based on innovative architectures, such as transformers or graph neural networks, hold great potential. This is where our work comes in. Use cases for these models include, as previously mentioned, the prediction of extreme events (e.g., from weather and remote sensing data) and applications in agriculture, where water resources need to be used efficiently (e.g., in field irrigation).
