Integrated Metallic Nanomaterial System Research Group at Hamburg University of Technology is seeking a motivated Research Associate (m/f/d) to join our team starting 1 November 2026. In this role, you will conduct research in the project “Electrolyte-driven Tunable Mechanics in Nanoporous Metals, contributing to cutting-edge studies at the intersection of materials science, mechanics, and electrochemisty.
You will explore the fabrication of ultrafine nanoporous metals and their hybrid nanomaterials with different electrolytes. You will investigate electrolyte-driven switchable mechanical properties in nanoporous metals using advanced in-situ mechanical characterization techniques, contributing to switchable mechanical/acoustic devices.
YOUR TASKS
- Developing and fabricating nanoporous metals or alloys with tunable pore sizes
- Microstructure characterization (using scanning and transmission electron microscopies as well as x-ray small angle scattering)
- Mechanical characterization (using in-situ dynamic mechanical analysis, dilatomer, and universal mechanical testing devices)
- Developing and understanding the links between structure and tunable mechanical properties
- Share your findings through publications and engage with the research community and public as well as work towards pursuing a doctorate
YOUR PROFILE
Requirements
- Completed scientific university studies (masters degree or equivalent), in particular in the subject Materials Science and Engineering
Desired knowledge and personal skills
- Strong background in the fields of nanomaterials, solid mechanics, thermodynamics, electrochemistry and metallurgy
- Knowledge and practical experience in the fields of dealloying, nanoporous metals, and in-situ mechanical characterization is a strong asset
- Practical hands-on experience in materials science research and related fields
- Very good English required (at least B2/C1 level according to CEFR) – German is not mandatory
- Curiosity and teamwork skills for working in interdisciplinary teams
OUR OFFER
- Scientific qualification with the opportunity to pursue a PhD
- Participation in international conferences, research stays, and collaborative networks
