As a PhD student at the Institute for Power Electronic Devices, you will explore novel frameworks for investigating and predicting the reliability of power semiconductor devices (including Si, SiC, and GaN).
Your work will include establishing and extending reliability models based on literature and experimental data, implementing simulation frameworks, and integrating ML-based methods for parameter identification. In close collaboration with academic and industrial partners, you will progressively refine models, validate them with available data, and integrate your results into innovative concepts for reliability improvement at the device level.
YOUR TASKS
- Systematic review and consolidation of existing reliability models for power semiconductor devices
- Development and extension of simulation frameworks (e.g., defect-based physics models, ML-assisted reliability assessment)
- Analysis and validation of models using available datasets from literature and experimental data, application of experimental characterization
- Publication of research results in peer-reviewed journals/conferences, teaching (four semester-weekly-hours German/English), and supervision of student theses
- Contribution to academic self-administration and opportunity for scientific qualification (e.g. PhD)
YOUR PROFILE
Requirements
- Completed scientific university studies, in particular in the subject Electrical Engineering, Physics, Computational Materials Science, or a related field, ideally with a focus on semiconductor devices, electronic materials, or numerical simulation
Desired knowledge and personal skills
- Expertise in semiconductor physics, power semiconductor devices, or reliability engineering
- Strong background in programming and simulation (Python, MATLAB; familiarity with ML methods desirable)
- Interest in physics of failure, data-driven modeling, semiconductor characterization methods, and interdisciplinary reliability research
- Independent, proactive, structured work style with excellent communication and teamwork skills
- Fluent German/English (B2/C1 GeR), strong motivation for scientific work and teaching
OUR OFFER
- Scientific qualification with the opportunity to pursue a PhD
- Intensive induction/ onboarding
- Flexible and family-friendly working conditions and possibility of mobile work
- 30 day vacation per year
- Good public transport connections
- pension scheme, capital-forming benefits
- Internal offers for health promotion and special conditions in further gyms
At the heart of TU Hamburg’s research, teaching and transfer of technology is the guiding principle of developing technology for people. The TU Hamburg sees itself in this context as a family-friendly and sustainable university with high performance and quality standards that strives for excellence in all its research fields. Interdisciplinarity, innovation, regionality and internationality are binding principles in our actions. With currently around 8.000 students, 110 professors and 1.650 employees, the TU Hamburg is characterised by short decision-making processes and close cooperation between the board, the institutes, the deans of studies, the research areas and the administration. We identify ourselves with a modern leadership culture and cultivate appreciative interaction.
