Institute for RemunerationEG 13 ID: 3426WE23 Start of employment: as soon as possible Application deadline 06.04.2026 Scope full time and limited employment for three years

As a PhD student at the Institute for Power Electronic Devices, you will work on advanced methods for the analysis and design of power semiconductor devices (Si, SiC, GaN). A central aspect will be the development of simulation and modelling frameworks, and applying advanced methods including AI/ML-based modeling to understand and enhance device performance and reliability. Your research will combine physics-based modelling, experimental characterization techniques, validation with experimental data, and innovative concepts for next-generation semiconductor technologies. The project offers close collaboration with academic and industrial partners, aiming at both scientific advancement and technological application.

YOUR TASKS

  • Development of physics-based and data-driven simulation frameworks in silicon and wide-bandgap devices (SiC/GaN)
  • Verification and refinement of models using experimental datasets, application and analysis of experimental characterization techniques
  • Application of advanced methods (e.g., AI/ML-supported approaches) for analyzing and improving device behavior and reliability
  • Publication of research results in peer-reviewed journals/conferences, teaching (4.0 SWS German/English), and supervision of student theses
  • Contribution to academic self-administration and opportunity for scientific qualification (e.g. PhD)

YOUR PROFILE

Requirements

  • Completed scientific university studies, in particular in the subject Electrical Engineering, Physics, Computational Materials Science, or a related field, ideally with a focus on semiconductor devices, electronic materials, or numerical simulation methods

Desired knowledge and personal skills

  • Expertise in semiconductor physics, device simulation, and/or computational modelling
  • Proficiency in MS-Office, programming curiosity, strong interest in scientific research and academic teaching
  • Interest in experimental semiconductor characterization methods, data evaluation and interdisciplinary collaboration with partners
  • Very good English (German desirable); strong communication, presentation, and teamwork skills
  • Independent, structured working style with motivation for in-depth scientific work and pursuing a doctoral degree

OUR OFFER

  • Flexible and family-friendly working conditions and possibility of mobile work
  • 30 day vacation per year (5-days a week)
  • Good public transport connections
  • pension scheme, capital-forming benefits

At the heart of TU Hamburg’s research, teaching and transfer of technology is the guiding principle of developing technology for people. The TU Hamburg sees itself in this context as a family-friendly and sustainable university with high performance and quality standards that strives for excellence in all its research fields. Interdisciplinarity, innovation, regionality and internationality are binding principles in our actions. With currently around 8.000 students, 110 professors and 1.650 employees, the TU Hamburg is characterised by short decision-making processes and close cooperation between the board, the institutes, the deans of studies, the research areas and the administration. We identify ourselves with a modern leadership culture and cultivate appreciative interaction.
