As part of the BlueBattery research project, we are seeking a highly motivated and talented Research Associate for a fully-funded three-years position. You will address fundamental science questions and materials design challenges in safe electric energy storage to accumulate electrical energy from renewable energy sources. You will explore different methods and techniques to fabricate multilayer functional materials for supercapacitor separators and electrodes. The BlueBattery project focuses on the development of clay-based supercapacitors using abundant natural materials such as clay, carbons, and water-based electrolytes. These systems are intrinsically fire-safe, environmentally benign, and designed for integration into structural elements, combining energy storage with additional functions. The project is conducted in close collaboration with the Hamburg University of Technology and industrial partners from the construction and energy sectors.
YOUR TASKS
- Conduct experimental research on clay-based and carbon-based electrode materials for supercapacitor applications
- Investigate electrochemical performance, stability, and aging mechanisms of integrated energy storage systems
- Fabricate and characterize prototype supercapacitor elements suitable for integration into construction components
- Collaborate closely with project partners in academia and industry, including construction and energy companies
- Publish research results in peer-reviewed journals and present findings at international conferences
YOUR PROFILE
Requirements
- Completed scientific university studies, in particular in the subject Physics, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Electrochemistry
Desired knowledge and personal skills
- Strong interest in sustainable energy storage, electrochemistry, and environmentally friendly materials
- Experience in at least one of the following: electrochemistry, energy storage devices; functional or porous materials; clay-based or mineral materials
- Motivation to work in a highly interdisciplinary and application-oriented research environment
- Very good communication skills in English (written and oral, B2/C1 CEFR) - German is not required
OUR OFFER
- Participation in a highly innovative research project with strong relevance for sustainable construction and energy transition
- Access to state-of-the-art laboratory infrastructure and materials characterization facilities
- Close collaboration with industrial partners and opportunities for technology transfer and commercialization
- Support for personal development and career advancement, including participation in international conferences, workshops, and networking events
