The Berlin University of the Arts (UdK Berlin) is one of the largest and most diverse art universities in Europe, where artistic teaching and practice intersect with academic discourse to shape its distinctive profile. With a history spanning more than 300 years, it is deeply rooted in the city of Berlin and, with more than 700 events each year, serves as a significant cultural driving force.

UdK Berlin unites a broad spectrum of study programmes in Fine Arts, Design, Music, Performing Arts, and the academic disciplines related to these fields. Its profile is complemented by the Inter-University Centre for Dance Berlin and the Jazz Institute Berlin. For its approximately 4,500 students – about one third of whom come from abroad – the university offers excellent opportunities for study and research, fostering ongoing exchange between artistic practice and scholarly reflection.

The UdK Berlin, College of Architecture, Media and Design – Institute of Transmedia Design –, is seeking to appoint a:

Professor at a university of arts (m/f/d)

– Salary group W 3 –
Permanent full-time professorship
Field of teaching: Illustration
Teaching obligation: 18 course hours (LVS)

Start of service of the professorship: 1 October 2027

Duties the open position offers:

  • teaching and research in the above field of study within the bachelor and master’s programme Visual Communication with the main focus Illustration
  • development of future-oriented formats in the shaping of the relationship between word, image, narration and communication
  • teaching of analytical and conceptual approaches as well as an appreciation for the image as an expression of concepts and vehicle for messages
  • assistance of students in their development of a distinctive visual language and stance
  • teaching of image development from the draft to the definitive form and technical implementation of different media
  • further development of the field of study through critical discourse, experimentation and research
  • active involvement in academic self-administration

Employment requirement in accordance with § 100 of Berlin Act on Higher Education (BerlHG):

  • university degree (master’s or equivalent) in a field relevant to the course of study
  • teaching aptitude, supported by evidence of multiple years of relevant teaching experience
  • a special aptitude for artistic work
  • other artistic achievements

other requirements:

  • proof of outstanding artistic/design experience, preferably in an international setting
  • proof of the candidate’s own publications, exhibitions and prizes, awards and equivalent accolades
  • in-depth knowledge and experience within the spectrum of printing techniques
  • written and spoken fluency in German and English
