Doctoral Researcher/PhD position

The third-party-funded position is offered for a period of 3 years, if no former times of qualification must be considered. The starting date is 1 April 2026. The position is part-time (65 % of regular working hours) with salary and benefits commensurate with a public service position in the state Hesse, Germany (TV-H E 13, 65%).

The mission of the multidisciplinary research consortium of the newly established Transregional Collaborative Research Center (CRC) 425 “Desmosomal dysfunction in epithelial barriers “ (DEFINE) is to uncover dynamic molecular and cellular mechanisms related to dysfunction of desmosomes. The CRC 425 combines cutting-edge technologies and translational approaches using patient-derived samples.

The overall goal of subproject B01 on “Inflammatory signature in pemphigus”, project leader Dr. Michael Hertl, is to investigate the molecular and cellular mechanisms by which desmosome dysfunction drives epithelial barrier failure and inflammation in pemphigus vulgaris (PV) and inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). Particular focus is placed on the interplay between autoreactive T helper 2 cells and epithelial responses. We will integrate patient-derived samples, in vitro and ex vivo models, multiomics technologies, and in vivo validation to uncover shared and tissue-specific mechanisms of immune-epithelial dysregulation. To verify the findings in patients with PV, we will include age-matched healthy controls. We will also include patients with the common inflammatory skin disease lichen planus (LP) which shows an Th1-dominated T cell responses against desmosomal autoantigens.

Tasks:

  • scientific services in reasearch in the context of this DFG-funded CRC subproject, including
  • ex vivo and in vitro characterisation of autoreactive T cells in PV patients
  • phenotypic and deep analysis of inflammatory signatures in PB and IBD lesions
  • close interaction with partners of the CRC with regard to organoid models and preclinical animal models of PV and IBD patients
  • scientific work-up and communication of findings within the CRC and beyond

The position is limited to a time period deemed adequate for the completion of a doctoral degree. As part of the assigned duties, there will be ample opportunity to conduct the independent scientific research necessary for the completion of a doctorate. The limitation complies to Section 2 (1) of the German Academic Fixed-Term Contract Act (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz – WissZeitVG).

Profile:

  • MSc-degree or equivalent in immunology, (cell) biology, biochemistry, or a related field
  • strong interest in immunology/autoimmunity and translational biomedical research
  • hands-on experience in cell culture and in the application of standard immunological techniques, e.g., flow cytometry, cell sorting, ELISA, ELISpot
  • first experience in multiparametric/high-dimensional flow cytometry is an advantage
  • highly motivated with the ability to work both independently on experimental and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team
  • strong communication skills and proficiency in English
