The University of Marburg, founded in 1527, offers a variety of excellent programs of study for around 22,000 students and confronts the important topics of our time through excellent research across a broad spectrum of sciences.

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science invites applications for a

Professorship (Open Rank: W2 or W1 Tenure Track to W2) in Mathematical Optimization

The tenure-track professorship (W1 to W2) is initially a six-year fixed-term position; the W2 professorship is a tenured position.

Tasks:

The successful candidate will strengthen the research priorities of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science by establishing a dedicated research group on optimization and will actively participate in research networks and initiatives within the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science and at Marburg University. In terms of teaching, the position requires offering regular courses specifically in the area of discrete and continuous optimization, as well as contributing to the foundational education of students in the department’s bachelor’s and master’s programs and in the mathematics teacher education program. The focus here is on the Data Science, Business Mathematics, and Business Informatics programs.

Profile:

The successful candidate should have an outstanding track record in a modern applied field of mathematical optimization (for example: optimization in machine learning, optimal control problems, optimization with partial or ordinary differential equations, parameter identification). We are particularly interested in areas that establish cross-disciplinary connections between existing research groups and promote networking within the department. A willingness to collaborate with other departments at Philipps University of Marburg and to establish practical connections both within and outside the university is required. A completed university degree in Mathematics, an outstanding doctorate and a special pedagogical aptitude are required. Furthermore, experience in initiating and securing, externally funded projects is desirable for the tenure-track professorship; for the W2 professorship, experience in the successful acquisition of third-party funding is expected.

For a W2 professorship, an independent research and teaching profile, high-ranking peer-reviewed publications, independently acquired and managed competitive research projects, as well as international visibility are expected.

The following applies specifically to the tenure-track professorship (W1 with a tenure track leading to W2):

The call for applications for the tenure-track professorship is expressly directed at researchers in the early stages of their scientific careers. The duration of the employment in research and science after obtaining the doctoral degree should not exceed four yearFurthermore, the applicant should not have earned their doctorate at the University of Marburg. In case the doctoral degree was obtained at the University of Marburg, the applicant should have worked in research and science outside of the University of Marburg for at least two years thereafter (in accordance with Section 70(3) HessHG). We are seeking a candidate with initial outstanding research achievements and an innovative research profile that demonstrates the potential for a further successful career in research at the highest international level. Appointment to the qualifying professorship will be made, subject to meeting the requirements under civil service law, as a temporary civil servant for a term of six years. Upon a positive evaluation of the candidate’s academic, pedagogical, and personal qualifications, the appointment will be converted to a tenured civil service position, accompanied by the conferral of a W2 professorship. The Tenure Track professorship is initially a grade W1 fixed term (6 years) position. If the requirements under general German civil service law are met, the applicant shall be granted a temporary civil service status for a period of six years. In the event of a positive evaluation of the professional, didactic and personal aptitude, the applicant will be granted a civil service status for life, combined with the assignment of a W2 permanent professorship. Further information on tenure track professorships at the University of Marburg is available at Two years after taking up the position, knowledge of German at C1 level is required.

Information on the tenure-track process at Philipps University of Marburg can be found at

The employment requirements according to Sections 67 and 68 of the Hessian Higher Education Act (Hessisches Hochschulgesetz - HessHG) apply. With regard to tenure-track professorships, Section 70 of the HessHG applies in particular.

The University of Marburg attaches great importance to the intensive supervision of students and doctoral candidates and expects from its lecturers and thus from the applicants a distinctive presence at the university and a high degree of commitment in the field of academic teaching.
