to be filled by 1 October 2026. Data-driven decision making is a cross-cutting theme that runs through all business research and teaching priorities in the School of Business and Economics at Philipps University. The School of Business and Economics wants to strengthen this topic regarding research and teaching.
In terms of content, the successful candidate is expected to conduct research into issues relating to the design and application of data science methods in relation to decision preparation and support in relevant areas of business administration. Third-party funded projects should be planned, applied for, and carried out. A transfer of knowledge between science and practice is welcomed. Cooperation with other thematically relevant institutions at the university is expected. Committed teaching in the department's B.Sc. and M.Sc. programs, as well as interdisciplinary courses using modern software packages, is expected, primarily in English. Data literacy and machine learning methods should also be given great importance in teaching.
Candidates must have obtained a doctorate with an outstanding dissertation in a relevant field (preferably in business, economics, business informatics, or operations research). In addition, they must have a track record of scientific achievements in the field of data-driven decision-making with a quantitative focus. The methods must come from the fields of predictive or prescriptive analytics with a business application context, e.g., from operations research, artificial intelligence, machine learning, or applied statistics. In addition to the ability to produce excellent scientific work, documented by publications in leading international journals, and a strong commitment to teaching and pedagogical aptitude are required. Experience in the successful acquisition of third-party funding is expected. An interdisciplinary orientation of research and teaching activities e.g., through connectivity to the Cluster of Excellence “The Adaptive Mind,” is an advantage.
The appointment requirements according to Sections 67 and 68 of the Hessian Higher Education Act (Hessisches Hochschulgesetz - HessHG) apply. Philipps University attaches great importance to the intensive supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as doctoral candidates and expects its teaching staff to have a strong presence at the university.
