The University of Marburg, founded in 1527, offers a variety of excellent programs of study for around 22,000 students and confronts the important topics of our time through excellent research across a broad spectrum of sciences.

The Research Training Group 2937 „Nucleotide Metabolism in Microbes (MiNu)“ is currently accepting applications for a

Research Associate (Postdoctoral Fellow) and Independent Research Group Leader

The position is offered for a period of 2 years, if no former times of qualification must be considered, with the option to extend for an additional two years. The starting date is 1 October 2026. The position is fulltime with salary and benefits commensurate with a public service position in the state Hesse, Germany (TV-H E 14).

The Research Training Group comprises eleven subprojects at Philipps University in Marburg and analyzes the functions and metabolism of nucleotides and related topics in various microbial species. The Research Training Group offers a wide range of opportunities for scientific exchange and professional development in an interdisciplinary environment through annual symposia, workshops, and retreats, as well as monthly seminars. Further information is available at: .

The research group is expected to work independently on a current research topic related to nucleotides. To this end, an additional doctoral position (65% TV-H E13, 3 years) and a budget for consumables will be provided, as well as access to laboratories and offices equipped with modern laboratory equipment. The research group is intended to complement the “MiNu” consortium and will receive support in establishing its own research topic and in all other matters related to the transition to scientific independence.

Tasks:

  • Developing an independent line of research in the field of nucleotide research in microorganisms. The technical focus of the work is not limited to a specific discipline. Research in the fields of molecular microbiology, chemical biology, or bioinformatics is conducted at MiNu. An expansion of methods toward biophysics or other disciplines is welcome, as long as the research is relevant to MiNu
  • Conducting collaborative research in a multidisciplinary and international environment
  • Disseminating research results through publications and conference presentations
  • Applying for independent external funding: preparing for the next career step toward becoming a Principal Investigator

The position will be filled by a temporary contract that is limited to the period which is necessary to gain further scientific expertise (such as the preparation for a subsequent qualification period). Within the entrusted tasks the opportunity for independent scientific work to obtain further personal qualification is given. The limitation complies with Section 2(1) of the German Academic Fixed-Term Contract Act (WissZeitVG).

Profile:

  • MSc-degree or equivalent and a PhD in a research field relevant to the position (e.g., biochemistry, microbiology, physics, or synthetic biology)
  • Excellent expertise in the analysis of proteins and/or metabolites
  • Very good knowledge of research into the physiology of microorganisms
  • Publication(s) as first author in internationally renowned scientific journals
  • Initial demonstrable experience in independently supervising and leading scientific projects (e.g., through serving as a corresponding author) is advantageous
  • Initial experience in mentoring and supervising doctoral students

Disposition to own scientific qualification is expected.

We offer:

  • A dynamic international research environment as one of Europe’s leading centers for microbiological research
  • Comprehensive, state-of-the-art technical and infrastructural facilities
  • Support for international researchers through the International Office at Philipps University of Marburg
  • Ticket for free use of public transport in the state Hesse, Germany
  • Company pension plan (VBL)
