The Faculty of Catholic Theology (FB 02) at the University of Münster is looking to fill the following position at the earliest possible date:

Assistant professorship (W1 with W3 tenure track) in Medieval and Modern Ecclesiastical History with an expertise in the Vatican Archives

The position is limited to three years with the possibility of a three-year extension. If evaluated positively, the person appointed will be granted a permanent W3-level professorship.

The assistant professorship has been established as part of the 25-year Academy project “The Vatican and the Persecution of Jews in Europe (VVEJ): Petitions sent to the Pope and their passage through the Vatican authorities”. The person appointed (m/f/d) will be expected to oversee this project at some point in the future, while also representing the entire spectrum of research and teaching in medieval and modern ecclesiastical history at the Faculty of Catholic Theology (FB 02). They will be responsible for providing instruction in all subject-relevant degree programmes offered by the Faculty in all phases of study, as well as carrying out administrative duties.

The person appointed will be able to demonstrate an outstanding record in research and teaching, as well as a willingness to contribute to academic discussion and collaborative research and teaching projects in the Faculty of Catholic Theology and the University of Münster. Of particular interest are candidates who have been involved in externally funded projects and who have a network of (international) contacts.

The person appointed must have a university degree in Catholic theology, meet the relevant canonical requirements, have completed a doctoral degree in Catholic theology (Ecclesiastical History), and be able to teach at university level. In particular, they should have a sound knowledge of the Vatican Archives and other Roman archives during the Nazi era, the requisite language and palaeographic skills, a proven expertise in the field of digital editions, and excellent team-working skills.

The University of Münster strongly supports equal opportunities and diversity. We welcome all applicants regardless of sex, nationality, ethnic or social background, disability, age, sexual orientation or gender identity. We are committed to creating family-friendly working conditions.

We actively encourage applications from women. Women with equivalent qualifications and academic achievements will be preferentially considered unless these are outweighed by reasons which necessitate the selection of another candidate.
