The Institute of Theoretical Physics in the Faculty of Physics at the University of Münster, Germany, is seeking to fill the position of a

Doctoral Research Associate (Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiterin, salary level E 13 TV-L, 67%)

commencing on 1 October 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter. We are offering a fixed-term part-time position (67%) for 3 years that is tied to working toward a doctoral degree in Theoretical Physics. Full-time employees are required to teach 4 hours per week during the semester.

Your tasks:

  • Carry out an independent doctoral research project in theoretical and computational modelling of multi-layered active materials with application to stratified biological tissue
  • Develop and analyse physical models (cell based and/or continuum models) and numerical simulations to investigate emergence and mechanical stability of the layered architecture, as well as transport properties in these systems
  • Disseminate research results through scientific publications, presentations, and active participation in the research environment
  • Participation in teaching, self-administration, and co-organisation of events at the Physics department

Our expectations:

  • A M.Sc. degree in Physics, Applied Mathematics, or similar is required
  • Solid background in areas such as soft matter physics, theoretical biophysics, or fluid dynamics is advantageous
  • Experience with numerical methods and scientific programming (Matlab, Python, COMSOL) is desirable
  • Very good written and spoken English
  • An independent, structured and analytical working style combined with high motivation to collaborate in an interdisciplinary environment
