The Institute of Cultural Anthropology/European Ethnology in the Faculty of History and Philosophy at the University of Münster, Germany, is seeking to fill the following position, scheduled to commence on 1 July 2027:

Professorship (W1-level with W2 tenure track) in “Historical Anthropology”

The position is initially limited to three years with the possibility of a three-year extension following a positive interim evaluation. Upon receiving a final positive evaluation after those six years, the appointee will be granted a permanent W2-level professorship. Assistant professors are required to teach 4 hours per week during the first three years of employment, and 5 hours per week during the second three years of employment. Permanent W2-level professors are obliged to provide 9 hours of instruction per week.

Your tasks:

• Research and teach cultural anthropology with a focus on historical anthropology of the 19th, 20th and/or 21st century
• Develop digital humanities approaches in this field (e.g. museums, collections, archives) in research and teaching and with visible outreach
• Collaborate in interdisciplinary study programmes and research networks at the faculty and University level
• Teach courses (also in English) and administer examinations in the BA programme “Cultural and Social Anthropology” and the MA programme “Cultural Anthropology”
• Participate in academic administrative duties

Our expectations:

• To be considered for this position, you should hold a university degree in cultural anthropology / European ethnology and/or history / contemporary history / history and philosophy of science (with relevant expertise in anthropological approaches / cultural analysis, demonstrated in particular in a doctoral thesis), pedagogical aptitude in university teaching and special academic qualification, substantiated by an outstanding, subject-relevant doctoral degree.
• Excellent knowledge of empirical historical research (material, visual and/or written sources) is required.
• Excellent knowledge of relevant theoretical and analytical approaches is required.
• Excellent English skills are required. German language skills are not a requirement but a willingness to learn is desirable. • The competence to connect local and regional research on popular culture with a transnational perspective would be welcomed.
• Expertise in the history of humanities is desirable in order to consider classical collections (archives, collections, museums) in research and teaching in a new and interdisciplinary way.
• Competence in digital humanities is welcome.
• Ideally you should already possess international research and teaching experience.
