The Institute of Musicology (Prof. Dr Jäger’s work area) in Faculty 08 (History/Philosophy), in a joint project with the Institute of Arabic and Islamic Studies (Prof. Dr Bauer’s work area) in Faculty 09 (Philology) at the University of Münster, Germany, is seeking to fill the position of a

Research Associate (Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiterin, salary level E 13 TV-L)

for the DFG-funded project “Corpus Musicae Ottomanicae. Critical Editions of Near Eastern Music Manuscripts” (CMO). We are offering a fixed-term part-time position (50%) until 30 September 2027.

Your tasks:

Working independently in the following areas:

  • Contributing to the scholarly edition and preparation for publication of vocal and instrumental works.
  • Contributing to the philological supervision of the overall project, in particular with regard to the transcription of the titles and text lines accompanying the musical notation.
  • Assisting with the sub-project “CMO – Source Catalogue”, including, where necessary, the critical transcription of the titles and opening lines of the printed scores.

Our expectations:

  • An above-average PhD or, in exceptional cases, a particularly strong Master’s degree in Ottoman Studies, Turkish Studies or Musicology is required.
  • The ability to work as part of a team, an appropriate level of commitment to project administration, involvement in organising project-related events and support for public relations work are desirable.
  • A good command of English, a good command of Ottoman Turkish and experience in text or music editing are expected. A basic knowledge of Greek is also desirable.
  • Experience in using word processing programmes and a willingness to learn the basics of working with databases, where relevant to the project, are required.
