In our collaborative research center LiMatI, we are working on developing novel spin qubits based on fluorescent molecules embedded into 2D materials. One particulary promising direction is to use these novel sensors as scanning probes for optical near-field microscopy and magnetic imaging. We are presently looking for a new PhD student to spearhead this direction of research in the future. As a successful applicant, your work will consist of the following directions:

THESE ARE YOUR TASKS:

  • deposition of ordered arrangements of fluorescent molecules on boron nitride by wet-chemistry and sublimation processes
  • encapsulation of molecules in boron nitride by stamping assembly of multilayer heterostructures
  • development of microwave-optical protocols for spin readout and experimental testing at room temperature and in cryorgenic conditions in confocal microscopes
  • use of encapsulated fluorescent molecules as scanning probes in a planar scanning probe setup
  • near-field microscopy of plasmonic nanostructures and near-field energy transfer by scanning fluorescent molecules
  • magnetic imaging by scanning fluorescent molecules
  • publication of the results and dissemination in talks on national and international conferences

THIS MAKES YOU A GOOD FIT:

  • completed university degree (state exam, diploma, master's degree or comparable degree) in a STEM subject, peferably physics, and with preferably excellent results
  • strong background in design and construction of opticals systems, or clear potential and willigness to build expertise in this domain
  • strong background in device assembly from 2D materials, or clear potential and willingness to build expertise in this domains
  • excellent academic track record
  • ability to corperate in a diverse team and in an interdisciplinary environment
  • willingness to investigate scientific questions in depth and search for fundamental understanding of phenomena
  • fluent englisch language proficiency, and willingness to build basic proficiency in german
  • willingness to work seriously and with commitment on a project of one's own scientific qualification
