We are excited to announce an opening for a PhD position within the EU project "Ultrafast Picoscopy of Solids.". The 21st century demands novel imaging techniques that allow us to delve into the dynamics of valence electrons in matter, observing their behavior in space (tens of picometers) and time (from femtoseconds to attoseconds). This project aims to develop and utilize ultrafast picoscopy, a groundbreaking method that combines intense laser fields and state-of-the-art laser pulses to achieve unprecedented resolution in both space and time. By driving the coherent motion of electrons inside crystals with intense laser fields, we can generate high harmonics of the fundamental frequency, revealing crucial information about the spatial arrangement of electrons and atoms at the sub-angstrom scale. With optical attosecond pulses, whose field waveform is confined to a fraction of a femtosecond, we aspire to record real-time movies of electrons in solids, capturing their motion at picometer and attosecond scales.

Objectives: Enable three-dimensional visualization of chemical bonds in condensed matter, Achieve detailed visualization of structural changes in crystalline materials, Track atomic and electron motion in real time in both ordinary and correlated materials.

THESE ARE YOUR TASKS:

  • developing the experimental tools required for ultrafast picoscopy
  • creating theoretical and numerical tools for detailed analysis and interpretation of experimental data
  • collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to meet the project's grant objectives

THIS MAKES YOU A GOOD FIT:

  • completed university degree (state exam, diploma, master's degree or comparable degree) in Physics
  • completed PhD in physics with at least magna cum laude
  • strong interest in basic research
  • ability to work independently as well as in a team and in new subjects areas
  • experience in lasers (typically acquired by a doctor thesis)
  • good command of programming tools such as MATLAB and LabVIEW
  • good understanding of optics and nonlinear optics.
  • very good knowledge of the German or English language is mandatory
  • previous experience in ultrafast science (ultrafast techniques) or simulations of scattering phenomena of electromagnetic waves with matter will be a strong advantage

WE AS AN EMPLOYER:

Equal opportunities are important to us. We welcome applications from suitable severely disabled people or people from traditionally underrepresented groups. We aim to increase the proportion of women in research and teaching and therefore encourage suitably qualified women to apply. We welcome applications from people of other nationalities or with a migration background.

WE OFFER YOU:

FURTHER INFORMATION:

We will determine the experience level individually, taking into account your previous professional experience.

If you are already employed part-time at the university, we will check individually whether an increase in working hours is possible as a result of your application.

The temporal limitation of the employment relationship is based on § 2 (2) Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz.

We look forward to receiving your application (cover letter, CV, degree certificate stating your final grade) by 16.06.2026 at the latest. We can only consider applications received via our homepage. Please send us your documents via the ‘Online application’ button at the end of a job offer. Unfortunately, we cannot accept e-mail applications.

Incomplete application documents may not be considered in the further course of the selection process.

Unfortunately, we can not cover application and travel costs.
