The Institute of Biochemistry (Director: Univ.-Prof. Dr. Thomas Krey) at the University of Lübeck is seeking a full-time Research Associate / Postdoc (m/f/d) starting January 1, 2027 (currently 38.7 hours per week). The position is limited to a term of two years.
Our group uses mostly structural biology/biophysical techniques with a special focus on X-ray crystallography and cryo-electron microscopy to study viruses that constitute a threat for global health and their interactions with the immune system. The structural knowledge gained from our experiments can be used for structure-based design of antivirals and/or vaccines, i.e., has a direct translational potential.
The collaborative project of interest, funded by the VW Foundation, aims to develop antiviral drugs against the hepatitis E virus using structure-based methods, in particular X-ray crystallography. For this purpose the Universities of Frankfurt and Bochum, and the Fraunhofer Institute for Translational Medicine and Pharmacology form a vibrant network together with the University of Lübeck.
Tasks:
- Production and crystallization of recombinant proteins
- X-ray crystallographic analysis of protein crystals, data collection, and data analysis
- Structure determination of proteins using X-ray crystallography
- Identification of inhibitors using structural biology and in silico methods
- Presentation of research results, both orally and in writing
Requirements:
- Ph.D. in the natural sciences, preferably biochemistry, life sciences, chemistry or biology
- Practical and theoretical knowledge in protein production, purification, and crystallization
- Practical and theoretical knowledge in X-ray crystallographic structure determination of proteins
- Fluency in spoken and written English
- Ability and enthusiasm to work both independently and collaboratively in an interdisciplinary field and an international team
- Interest in attending international conferences and presenting your own results
- Creativity and enthusiasm in the search for innovative solutions
